Chattery is a fictitious project that was created together with my colleague Talischa Lücke, during our third semester in the Information & Communication Design program.
The project idea was to come up with something that could generate happiness, in any way possible. Our final approach was an initiative called Chattery, which provides drinking coasters for restaurants that promote dialogue between the customers.
Our coasters contain two funny or interesting 'icebreaker' questions to initiate a conversation between people (especially strangers) sitting together in a restaurant. The coasters have different designs on each side. One focuses on the questions only, and the other gives an incentive for the person to turn it over and have fun, as well as a link to the complementary website.
The project is inspired by research done on the science of happiness, especially a Podcast episode by Dr. Laurie Santos called "Mistakenly Seeking Solitude". In this episode, Laurie explains how recent studies have shown that having only a bit of daily conversation in our routines can significantly increase our happiness levels.
Additionally, a set of small stickers was designed, which would be placed near the restaurant entrance door, to introduce and call attention to the initiative. A fictitious website was also created.
